Last June, my family had the opportunity to visit Peru, and climb to Machu Picchu via the Inca Trail which was a bucket list destination for me!
Exploring Lima: A City Alive with Culture
We arrived in Lima, a fun vibrant town. The streets bustled with activity, the air filled with the enticing aromas of Peruvian cuisine. Eager to immerse myself in the local culture, I embarked on a whirlwind tour of the city. The Hilton Lima was a great stay and location.
From the historic Plaza Mayor to the bohemian district of Barranco, every corner of Lima seemed to hold a story waiting to be discovered. But perhaps the highlight of my time in Lima was the cooking class our family took where we went to the market to buy fresh ingredients, learned how to make Ceviche, Lomo Saltado and a real Pisco Sour. We were able to hit at a number of great restaurants that Lima is so famous for.
Journey to Cusco: Gateway to the Andes
Leaving Lima behind, we flew to the heart of the Andes, to the ancient city of Cusco. Steeped in history and surrounded by breathtaking mountain vistas, Cusco truly feels like you are tracing the footsteps of the Inca kings and Spanish conquistadors alike. We stayed at Palacio Del Inka, the amazing service and history and architecture of the hotel is spectacular. The breakfast, divine!
We spent time acclimating to the high altitude, then explored the history of Cusco via a walking tour and explored the Plaza de Armas. Had time to see all the craft shops and local indigenous products. The following day we visited the Sacred Valley with the towering ruins of Pisac and Ollantaytambo, and had opportunities to visit an Alpaca farm and do some shopping in craft markets.
The Inca Trail: A Journey of a Lifetime
And then, the moment we had been waiting for arrived – the start of the Inca Trail. For four days, we traversed rugged mountain passes and dense cloud forests, hiking most of the day and with each step bringing us closer to the ultimate destination: Machu Picchu. Our guide, porters and the entire team and fellow travellers were amazing.
With each passing mile, the anticipation grew, until finally, on the fourth day, we stood before the Sun Gate, gazing down upon the lost city of the Incas. The 4 days were fantastic, definitely a physical and mental challenge. Plenty of other options for others who don't have the Inca Trail as their bucket list item, from 1 day to Machu Picchu or 2 days/1 night options to reach Machu Picchu (not everyone is a hiker!).
Relaxation at Tambo Del Inka: A Well-Earned Respite
But as awe-inspiring as Machu Picchu was, it was the peaceful serenity of Tambo Del Inka in the Sacred Valley that provided the perfect end to our journey. Nestled amidst the lush Urubamba Valley, this luxurious retreat offered a welcome respite from the rigors of travel and hiking.
We lounged by the pool, enjoyed the spa facilities and the outdoor gardens. We even had a visiting alpaca on the property. The people, the food and the experience is unforgettable!
Thanks!
